In this comprehensive renovation, an isolated and derelict traditional Scottish lodge in the West of Scotland was stripped back to its original stone walls, and linked to a large 2 storey modern new build element by a glazed open plan feature atrium.
The detail design for the development was progressed quickly from inception to a start on site and included securing all essential formal approvals from the council and proceeding with production information to allow a negotiated contract with the local Contractor. Site stage construction works were executed without issues and all leading to a successful completion, fully meeting the client's particular aspirations and requirements.
The Architects' concept and design for the bespoke dwelling, developed in close liaison with the discerning client, lead to a deliberate intent to create two specific elements for the house. The original small cottage was fully stripped back (roof, floors and wall linings, partitions etc) to leave exposed stone walls and then all was fully reinstated with new raised roof line and comprehensive fit-out to meet current building regulations and space standards. The proposed contemporary large two storey new build extension was linked via a modern slated and patent glazed open plan feature atrium offering viewing gallery and outstanding outlook both up and down the stunning Scottish landscape.
Accommodation includes open plan living, several private secluded spaces, media suite, various leisure facilities with an integrated and fully insulated garage. Separate extensive practical storage spaces for vehicles and ongoing maintenance within the estate were also incorporated in the proposals. All site services were renewed including an upgraded new electrical mains supply to this remote location, extensive rainwater harvesting and a domestic private water supply and treatment plant that will always meet demands during inclement seasonal times of the year.
The proposed materials for the development were very carefully considered from the outset. Local materials have been used wherever possible; all stonework was sourced from within the estate and made use of local tradesman, whilst the stunning external timber cladding was locally grown, milled and treated on site.
We set Richard and his team a very tough challenge of totally renovating an old cottage and then adding a large extension: we wanted the old part to be habitable within 6 months! Inevitably, the complexity of the project grew and Richard’s experience came to the fore to solve issues in a timely manner. He handled the builder very deftly. Quite how he managed the planning and building warrant parts of the Council I will never know, but we got exactly what we wanted. Overall, a very well designed house, with proper attention to detail and a well managed project. Always with good humour too!
